OUR STORY

Get to Know Us

With over 50 years in the forestry and lumber industry, our journey began by operating sawmills that process raw lumber throughout BC. However, with recent declines in forestry and logging, the growing need to keep wood waste from entering our landfills, we were able to adapt and convert our old mill site from a facility that generated wood waste to one that now recycles it.

With a passion for sustainability and a commitment to future generations, we strive to make a positive impact on our environment. Join us as we pave the way for a greener tomorrow.

HOW IT WORKS

Hog fuel is a biomass fuel made from all types of clean wood, used for heating and energy. It involves three stages: diverting/recycling, processing properly, and burning it to generate heat while controlling the burn for efficiency. This makes hog fuel an effective and sustainable energy choice.

Sustainable Recycling Process

Recycle

At our facility, we focus on providing our customers with a convenient location and hours of operation to quickly and easily drop off wood waste for recycling, which is then turned into 'Hog Fuel.'

Process

We process discarded wood with specialized equipment while monitoring its moisture content to create the perfect "Hog Fuel," which can then be used to produce the maximum amount of clean energy from every piece.

Burn

Once the moisture content is just right the 'Hog Fuel' is shipped to our energy plant in the Thompson-Nicola Region. There it is burnt at specific temperatures to generate the maximum amount of clean energy with the lowest possible emissions for our beautiful province.

OUR MISSION

At Smallwood Recycling, our mission is to divert as much wood as possible from entering our landfills and to be the leading wood waste recycling facility in the Lower Mainland. We are committed to transforming recycled wood into hog fuel, which generates clean energy for our province. Through our sustainable recycling processes, we aim to reduce waste and minimize our environmental impact, contributing to a cleaner and greener future for everyone.

Metro Vancouver City logo

Material from construction, demolition, land clearing and renovation of buildings makes up one-third of the waste sent to landfills in the region. Metro Vancouver aims to increase recycling and encourage reuse rates of the construction, renovation, and demolition industry by diverting building materials, such as wood from disposal.

Wood and plastic are the largest components of construction and demolition waste disposed of in the region, according to the 2022 Metro Vancouver Waste Composition Study.
